Ozempic Lawsuits Allege GLP-1s Linked to NAION Vision Loss

Ozempic semaglutide injection pen associated with NAION vision loss lawsuits and multidistrict litigation.

The manufacturers of Ozempic, Mounjaro, and other diabetes and weight loss drugs known as GLP-1 agonists are facing at least 21 lawsuits filed in federal court by patients who developed an eye condition known as NAION after taking these drugs.

Patients who used Ozempic or other GLP-1s for weight loss or to treat type-2 diabetes symptoms and were diagnosed with NAION or other vision problems may also be eligible to file a lawsuit and seek compensation for their illness.

Ozempic & Other GLP-1s Linked to Vision Loss from NAION

Ozempic (semaglutide) is part of a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, or GLP-1 agonists, which were developed to treat patients with type-2 diabetes. Other drugs in this class of medications include Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Rybelsus (semiglutide), Saxenda (liraglutide), Trulicity (dulaglutide), Wegovy (semaglutide), and Zepbound (tirzepatide).

Although Ozempic and other GLP-1s have only been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for diabetes, these medications have also been widely prescribed for weight loss, causing them to explode in popularity in the U.S.

Recent studies have shown that the use of Ozempic and similar diabetes and weight loss drugs may increase the risk of developing non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a rare eye disease that can cause vision loss, blindness, and other eye problems.

According to a 2024 study published in the medical journal JAMA Ophthalmology, Ozempic and Wegovy users with diabetes are four times more likely to be diagnosed with NAION. Among Ozempic and Wegovy patients who are obese, researchers found that the risk of developing NAION is eight times higher than normal.

NAION Vision Loss Lawsuits Filed Against Ozempic

Following reports of this link between Ozempic and NAION, dozens of patients have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of semaglutide or other GLP-1 agonists.

According to a recent court filing by Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro and Zepbound, at least 21 lawsuits have been filed in federal court by patients who used Ozempic or other GLP-1s and developed NAION vision loss.

In addition to these claims, the company reported that dozens of additional Ozempic vision loss lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of the drug or other GLP-1 agonists in state courts across the U.S. The majority of these state-level Ozempic lawsuits were filed in New Jersey, which is also the venue for 17 out of the 21 total NAION lawsuits that have been filed so far.

The manufacturers of Ozempic and similar diabetes-weight loss drugs are already facing hundreds of lawsuits filed by patients who developed gastroparesis or other serious stomach problems after taking these medications.

Although the total number of Ozempic NAION lawsuits that have been filed so far is currently much smaller, legal experts expect that the total number of federal and state-level claims involving Ozempic and NAION will grow as more patients learn about the link between GLP-1s and vision loss, or are diagnosed with eye problems linked to these medications.
