➢ Talc & Talcum Powder
Talc is a naturally-occurring substance that is one of the softest known minerals in existence. When talc is ground into a powder, it is known as talcum powder.
Because it is extremely good at absorbing moisture, talcum powder was often used in baby powder used to prevent diaper rash, as well as products that were marketed to women for feminine hygiene.
Because talcum powder is extremely fine-grained, it was also used to manufacture a number of skincare products, including facial powders, eye shadows, and skin cream.
Talc is also commonly used in industrial settings as a machine lubricant; as a filler and coating agent in the paper industry; as a textile lubricant; in the construction industry; and in the manufacturing of ceramics, foods, pharmaceutical products, plastics, polymers, and rubber.
Because mineral talc often occurs naturally near asbestos – which has been linked to mesothelioma cancer and asbestos lung cancer – consumers and workers who are exposed to talc or talcum powder products may be at risk of developing certain cancers.
➢ Talcum Powder & Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits
Lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson and other talcum powder manufacturers have alleged that women who use these products are at risk of developing ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer.
Studies have shown that women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene are 30-60% more likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Other studies have shown that using talcum powder can increase a woman’s risk of developing endometrial cancer.
More than 58,000 women have filed talcum powder lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson alleging that they developed ovarian cancer after using Johnson’s Baby Powder, Shower to Shower, or other talc products sold by the company.
In 2023, Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay an $8 billion settlement to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits filed by women with ovarian cancer from the company’s talcum powder products.
Women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene and have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer may still be eligible to file an individual lawsuit and receive compensation for their illness despite the pending Johnson & Johnson talcum powder settlement.
➢ Talc & Mesothelioma Lawsuits
Workers who have been exposed to asbestos-contaminated talc on the job may be at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer or asbestos lung cancer.
Because it can take many years after asbestos exposure for workers to be diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, it took decades before the link between talc and mesothelioma or lung cancer was fully understood.
Over the last two decades, a number of workers with asbestos diseases have filed lawsuits against companies that used or manufactured talc products after receiving an asbestos cancer diagnosis.
Factory workers, textile workers, ceramic workers, chemical plant workers, paper mill workers, construction workers, and other individuals who were exposed to asbestos on the job and diagnosed with mesothelioma or asbestos lung cancer may be eligible to file a lawsuit against the companies responsible for their exposure and receive compensation.
