➢ What is Benzene?

Benzene is a colorless (or sometimes light yellow) chemical that can be both man-made or naturally-present in many petrochemical products, including crude oil and gasoline. It is flammable, highly toxic, and known to cause cancer.

Benzene is primarily used as a solvent in the chemical industry, or in the production of many chemicals, gasoline, or other petroleum products. It is also used in the production of a variety of commercial and industrial products, including dyes, detergents, tires, and some plastics.

Because benzene is also an extremely effective cleaning product, many workers also used benzene on the job as a way to clean their tools.

Exposure to benzene occurs by breathing in air that contains this chemical. Workers who are employed at job sites where benzene is present may be at high risk of developing cancers that are linked to benzene exposure.

➢ Illnesses Linked to Benzene Exposure

Prolonged exposure to benzene in the workplace has been linked to several forms of cancer, including:

  1. Acute myelogenous leukemia
  2. Myelodysplasia
  3. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  4. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  5. Multiple myeloma

The health risks associated with benzene exposure depend upon the amount and length of exposure. Individuals who were exposed to high amounts of benzene for a greater length of time are at greater risk of developing benzene cancer.

Workers who were employed at job sites where benzene is produced or stored may be at higher risk of developing cancer because of the large amounts of benzene present at these facilities.

Some of the job sites or occupations that have been linked to the highest amounts of benzene exposure include:

  • Coke and coal chemical manufacturing
  • Industrial factories
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Oil and petroleum refineries
  • Rubber tire plants
  • Storage or transport of benzene, or petroleum products containing benzene

➢ Who Is Eligible to File a Claim?

  1. Worked at a petrochemical or industrial factory or plant;
  2. Worked there before 1980; and
  3. Diagnosed with one or more of the following conditions:

    • Myelodysplasia
