Studies Linked Tylenol & Acetaminophen to Autism & ADHD

In 2018, a study published by the American Journal of Epidemiology found that women who used Tylenol or acetaminophen for 28 days or more while they were pregnant were 20% more likely to give birth to a child with autism and 30% more likely to give birth to a child with ADHD.

The National Institutes of Health published a study in 2019 that found that Tylenol or acetaminophen during pregnancy were 2.26-2.86-times more likely to give birth to a child with ADHD and 2.14-3.62-times more likely to give birth to a child with autism.

A third study published in the European Journal of Epidemiology found that pregnant women who used Tylenol or acetaminophen were 19% more likely to give birth to a child with autism and 21% more likely to give birth to a child with ADHD.

Lawsuits Filed Against Pharmacies That Sold Tylenol & Acetaminophen

In the wake of these studies linking Tylenol and acetaminophen to an increased risk of autism and ADHD, dozens of lawsuits have been filed against drugstores and pharmacies that sold these products.

At least 19 lawsuits have been filed so far against CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and other pharmacies that sold Tylenol or acetaminophen. The lawsuits include the cases of at least 48 mothers who used these pain relievers during pregnancy and gave birth to a child with autism or ADHD.

In October 2022, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated 18 of the 19 lawsuits that have been filed so far in a multidistrict litigation in order to expedite the discovery and trial process of the litigation and make it easier for plaintiffs to receive a potential settlement.

Lawyers involved in these lawsuits say that they expect tens to hundreds of thousands of additional lawsuits involving Tylenol or acetaminophen and autism or ADHD to eventually be filed.
