Wright’s ProFemur hip implants have been linked to an increased rate of serious complications, including those that may result in the total failure of the device or revision surgery. Mississippi families file class action lawsuit over alleged asbestos exposure at Frito-Lay plant

A Mississippi family has filed a class action lawsuit against Frito-Lay, alleging that employees at it Jackson, Mississippi manufacturing plant were exposed to asbestos on the job, putting them at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer or other asbestos-related diseases. The lawsuit was filed by the son of a man who worked at Frito-Lay’s Mississippi plant and was diagnosed with lung cancer, which his son believes was caused by asbestos exposure. (more…)

Dozens of lawsuits involving Wright ProFemur hip implants consolidated in federal MDL

A panel of federal judges has ordered all lawsuits involving Wright’s ProFemur hip implants that have been filed in U.S. federal courts to be consolidated under a single judge. Wright Medical Technology and MicroPort Orthopedics (which purchased Wright’s hip division in 2013) are currently facing at least 42 ProFemur lawsuits in 25 federal court jurisdictions, although more lawsuits are expected to be filed. Legal experts predict thousands of Zantac, ranitidine cancer lawsuits

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed so far by patients who were diagnosed with cancer after using the heartburn drugs Zantac or ranitidine. Both of these drugs were recalled in 2019 after studies linked them to an increased cancer risk. Dspite of the high number of ranitidine and Zantac lawsuits filed so far, legal experts predict that manufacturers may be facing thousands of additional lawsuits as more patients who used these drugs are diagnosed with cancer. FDA withdraws Belviq, Belviq XR approval due to cancer risks

The Food and Drug Administration has formally withdrawn approval of the weight loss drugs Belviq and Belviq XR (lorcaserin), citing the increased cancer risk associated with these medications. The FDA had previously ordered the manufacturers of Belviq, Arena Pharmaceuticals and Eisai, to withdraw the two formulations of the drug in February after studies showed that patients who used the diet medications were more likely to develop cancer. FDA approves new drug combination to treat patients with pleural mesothelioma

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval for a two-drug combination designed to treat pleural mesothelioma. The new drug regimen — a combination of the medications Opdivo (nivolumab) and Yervoy (ipilimumab) — is the first mesothelioma drug treatment approved by the FDA in 16 years, and only the second ever FDA-approved mesothelioma treatment. In 2018, researchers uncovered evidence that patients using the interstitial cystitis drug Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) were at risk of developing serious and potentially permanent eye damage. In the two years since this evidence was first uncovered, other scientists have confirmed that Elmiron users may develop eye damage that can lead to vision loss or blindness. (more…)
