Stomach problems linked to 70% of Ozempic ER hospital admissions

According to a new study, nearly 70% of all hospital emergency room visits involving side effects from weight loss and diabetes drugs such as Ozempic (semaglutide) were caused by stomach problems, including gastroparesis.
Patients who were prescribed Ozempic or similar medications known as GLP-1 drugs and were diagnosed with gastroparesis, stomach paralysis, or frozen stomach may qualify to file a lawsuit and receive compensation for their illness.

Stomach Problems Leading Cause of Ozempic Hospitalizations
A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that 69.3% of hospitalizations linked to Ozempic or similar weight loss-diabetes drugs were caused by gastrointestinal issues among patients taking these medications.
Researchers found that between 2022 and 2023, there were about 24,500 hospital emergency room visits in the U.S. linked to medications like Ozempic.
Some of the most common gastrointestinal problems reported by patients who were hospitalized from Ozempic or similar drugs included nausea and vomiting (57.6% of total hospital admissions), abdominal pain (25.1%), and diarrhea (12.2%), the study found.
Ozempic Linked to Gastroparesis, Other Serious Stomach Conditions
Ozempic is part of a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which also includes the drugs Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Rybelsus (semiglutide), Saxenda (liraglutide), Trulicity (dulaglutide), and Wegovy (semiglutide).
Originally developed to treat patients with type-2 diabetes, the popularity of Ozempic and other GLP-1 receptor agonists exploded after some of these medications were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight loss.
Research has found that patients who are prescribed weight loss and diabetes drugs such as Ozempic are three-times more likely to develop gastroparesis or other serious stomach problems linked to these products.
In addition to the thousands of hospitalizations linked to Ozempic and similar drugs, the FDA has also reported that at least 162 deaths have been attributed to patients taking these medications.
Lawsuits Filed by Patients Hospitalized From Ozempic
The first lawsuit against Ozempic was filed in August 2023, following reports that patients taking semiglutide and similar medications could experience severe stomach problems – including gastroparesis, stomach paralysis (“frozen stomach”), or ileus.
As of April 2025, there have been about 1,700 lawsuits filed against the makers of Ozempic, Trulicity, Wegovy, and similar drugs. These lawsuits have alleged that patients using drugs such as Ozempic may face an increased risk of developing serious stomach problems.
Patients who were prescribed Ozempic or other GLP-1 receptor agonists for type-2 diabetes or weight loss and have been diagnosed with gastroparesis or other serious gastrointestinal side effects may be eligible to file a lawsuit and receive compensation.
Although the Ozempic litigation is already under way with a multidistrict litigation (or MDL) in in Pennsylvania, there is still time for diabetes and weight loss patients with serious stomach problems to file a lawsuit and receive the compensation to which they are entitled under the law.
