Lawsuits Filed Over Meningioma From Depo-Provera

According to a study published in March 2024 by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), women who use Depo-Provera birth control shots (medroxyprogesterone acetate) are more than five times more likely to be diagnosed with a type of brain tumors called meningioma.

Meningiomas are type of intracranial tumor that forms in the tissue surrounding the brain or the spinal cord. Although these tumors are benign, or non-cancerous, they can cause vision problems, headaches, numbness, seizures, and other side effects. In many cases, women with meningioma tumors may be forced to undergo surgery to have them removed.

The first Depo-Provera brain tumor lawsuit was filed against the manufacturer of the birth control shot in October 2024. Since then, dozens more women have come forward to file claims in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

In February 2025, many of these lawsuits were consolidated into a multi-district litigation (MDL) in Florida to help expedite the litigation process and make it easier for women with meningioma tumors from Depo-Provera to receive a settlement.

Who Is Eligible to File a Depo-Provera Lawsuit?

In order to qualify to file a lawsuit against Depo Provera, women who were injected with the birth control shot must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Injected with Depo Provera, Depo SubQ Provera 104, or “authorized generic” versions of medroxyprogesterone acetate shots;
  1. At least one year of exposure to the birth control shot (typically four injections);
  1. Diagnosed with cerebral meningioma.

If you meet all of the following criteria, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit against the manufacturers of the birth control shot and receive compensation.
