Juul’s nicotine formula identical to Marlboro, new study finds

A new study has found that the nicotine formula used by Juul Labs in the company’s e-cigarettes is nearly identical to one used by Altria Group in the company’s Marlboro cigarettes. The study was published this week by researchers at Portland State University in the journal Tobacco Control.
Juul was able to become the dominant retailer in the e-cigarette market thanks in part to the company’s use of nicotine sales in its flavored vaping pods. The aerosol vapor in previous e-cigarettes contained higher amounts of “freebase nicotine”, is more difficult to inhale.
Researchers in the study compared the chemical composition of the nicotine in Juul’s flavored pods to Marlboro cigarettes. They found that the potency and flavor of Juul vapor was almost identical to that of Marlboro cigarettes. The researchers described Juul as being almost an “e-cigarette analog” to Marlboro.
According to researchers, nicotine aerosol formula used in Juul is designed to make it easy to inhale large amounts of nicotine vapor without coughing. Experts say that the study helps to explain why so many non-smokers – including young people who didn’t realize that they could become addicted to Juul’s e-cigarettes – have become regular Juul users.
Juul Faces Lawsuits Over Vaping Injuries and Marketing
Over the past year, Juul has come under intense scrutiny for the company’s marketing practices, and the link between e-cigarettes and serious side effects.
In September, the Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to Juul warning the company to stop marketing its e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation aid. The agency said that Juul could face fines, seizures, or injunctions if it did not halt its illegal marketing practices.
Juul has also faced allegations of marketing its e-cigarettes to teenagers. Over the last few years, vaping with Juul has become an epidemic among teenagers, with millions of teens having tried the vaping device.
Juul has also been linked to an increased risk of serious and potentially deadly side effects. Experts say that Juul users may face an increased risk of strokes, seizures, or respiratory illnesses. Hundreds of Juul users who have been diagnosed with side effects caused by the company’s e-cigarettes have filed lawsuits against the company.
