Juul is facing more than 100 lawsuits filed by consumers who suffered serious injuries or became addicted to nicotine after using the company’s vaping devices. Legal experts say that thousands of additional lawsuits could be filed soon by users who suffered injuries or other problems after using Juul.

Juul’s electronic cigarettes were first sold in the U.S. in 2015. In the years since, Juul’s vaping products became wildly popular in the U.S. It was estimated that Juul controlled about 75% of the country’s e-cigarette market as of 2018.

But as the popularity of Juul increased, health experts began to express concerns about the safety of the vaping device. Some of the most serious complications that have been linked to vaping with Juul include strokes, seizures, and lung problems.

Experts have also alleged that Juul’s flavored vape pods were deliberately marketed to teenagers. Many Juul users – including teenagers and their families – say that they became addicted to the vaping device because the company did not properly that it could be highly addictive.

Lawsuits Filed Against Juul Over Serious Injuries & Addiction

At least 100 lawsuits have been filed against Juul so far by consumers who suffered serious injuries or became addicted after using the company’s vaping devices.

In October 2019, these lawsuits were consolidated in a multi-district litigation (MDL) in California. The lawsuits that are part of the California Juul MDL include class action lawsuits filed on behalf of consumers who became addicted to Juul, product liability lawsuits filed by users who suffered serious injuries after using the vaping device, and lawsuits filed by parents who allege that Juul intentionally marketed its e-cigarettes to teenagers.

Legal experts say that the lawsuits against Juul that have been filed so far may be just the tip of the iceberg. According to these experts, thousands of additional lawsuits are expected to be filed in the coming months on behalf of consumers who were seriously injured by Juul, or who became addicted to the vaping device as a result of the company’s deceptive marketing practices.

FDA Investigation Warns Juul Over Illegal Marketing Practices

In addition to the lawsuits filed against the company, Juul is also facing investigations from the Food and Drug Administration and other health agencies over the company’s marketing practices. Health experts say that Juul intentionally marketing its products to teenagers, and made false claims about the safety of the vaping device and its effectiveness as a smoking cessation aid.

In September 2019, the FDA sent a warning letter to Juul over the company’s deceptive marketing campaigns. The letter stated that Juul could face fines, seizures, or injunctions if it did not comply with federal health laws and stop its marketing campaigns that falsely claim that its vaping products are safer than tobacco cigarettes.

CDC Investigates Nationwide Epidemic of Vaping-Related Illnesses

Federal health officials have also been investigating a nationwide outbreak of respiratory illnesses that may be associated with vaping products, including Juul. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hundreds of consumers who used vaping products have been hospitalized with serious respiratory problems after vaping.

The first death associated with the outbreak of vaping-related respiratory illnesses was reported by health officials in Illinois in September 2019. Since then, the CDC and other health officials have reported several additional deaths linked to vaping.
