Chemical Hair Straighteners & Relaxers Linked to Cancer

Concerns about the link between chemical hair straighteners and hair relaxers first arose in October 2022, when a study conducted by the National Institute Of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) revealed that women who used these products were more likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

According to the NIEHS study, women who frequently used chemical hair straightening or relaxing products were 250% more likely to be diagnosed with uterine cancer by age 70 than women who never used these products. About 4% of frequent users of hair straighteners or hair relaxers eventually developed uterine cancer, compared to only 1.6% of women who never used them.

The majority of women who developed cancer after using chemical hair straighteners or hair relaxers were Black women. Although African-Americans are no more likely to develop cancer from the chemical in hair straighteners or relaxers than women of other races, because Black women are the most frequent users of these products, they account for the majority of cancer cases linked to hair straighteners and relaxers.

Women who frequently used chemical hair straighteners and hair relaxers may also be at risk of developing other types of cancer, including ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and fibroids.

Lawsuits Against Hair Straighteners & Relaxers Manufacturers

After the publication of the NIEHS study linking chemical hair straighteners and hair relaxers to an increased risk of uterine cancer, a Missouri woman who was diagnosed with uterine cancer filed the first chemical hair straighteners lawsuit against L’Oreal USA.

In the months since this lawsuit was filed, dozens of other lawsuits by women who were diagnosed with cancer after using hair straighteners or hair relaxers have been filed across the U.S. These lawsuits have alleged that companies that manufacturers chemical hair straighteners or relaxers such as L’Oreal, Luster’s, Namaste, SoftSheen Carson, and Strength of Nature knew, or should have known, about the increased risk of developing cancer faced by regular users of these products.

Lawyers involved in the chemical hair straighteners litigation say that they expect hundreds of additional lawsuits to be filed by women who were diagnosed with cancer against companies that manufacturers hair straighteners or hair relaxers.
