AFFF Firefighting Foam Linked to Cancer

Aqueous film-forming foam, or AFFF, is used by firefighters, aviation workers, and members of the Air Force and Navy to put out fires caused by gasoline, jet fuel, and other flammable liquids.

AFFF firefighting foam contains chemicals that known as per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), which are more commonly known as “forever chemicals”.

Exposure to the forever chemicals in AFFF has been linked to an increased risk of several types of cancer, including:

  • Endometrial cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Renal Cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Uterine cancer

Veterans who served in the U.S. Air Force or Navy and workers such as firefighters, airport workers, emergency workers, or first responders who were exposed to AFFF firefighting foam may be at risk of developing these or other cancers.

Lawsuits on Behalf of Veterans, Workers With AFFF Cancers

As of January 2025, more than 7,000 AFFF lawsuits have been filed against companies such as 3M, Chemguard, and Dupont that manufactured and sold firefighting foam.

These lawsuits against AFFF have alleged that the manufactures of these products knew about the risk of cancer associated with forever chemicals, but continued selling them to the U.S. military, airports, and emergency response teams.

Evidence submitted as part of these firefighting foam lawsuits has shown that the manufacturers of AFFF instructed their workers to use care when handling these products, removed female workers from fire foam production lines due to birth defects, and observed fish that had been poisoned with forever chemicals near AFFF productions plants. Yet in spite of this evidence, the manufacturers of firefighting foam continued selling these products for decades after the risks of AFFF were known.

In addition to compensation for their illness and the cost of medical treatments, workers who developed cancer from AFFF may also be entitled to punitive damages from manufacturers who continued to manufacture and sell firefighting foam in spite of their knowledge about the dangers of these products.
