Study Links Depo-Provera to Brain Tumors Risk
According to a January 2025 study published by the medical journal Expert Opinion on Drug Safety, women who used Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) face a “substantially increased risk” developing a form of brain tumors known as meningioma compared to women who used birth control pills.
Meningiomas are a type of brain tumors that grow in the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Although these tumors are often benign (or non-cancerous), they can cause serious neurological symptoms and may require surgery.
Researchers found that women who used the Depo shot for more than one year were 350% more likely to develop meningiomas than women who took oral contraceptives. Depo-Provera users who were treated with the birth control shot for more than one year continued to show elevated risks.
Other studies have also linked Depo-Provera to an increased risk of meningioma. This evidence supports growing concerns about the link between Depo-Provera and brain tumors, and it highlights why thousands of women have contacted birth control attorneys to find out whether they may qualify to file a Depo-Provera meningioma lawsuit.
Lawsuits Filed Over Meningioma Brain Tumors from Depo-Provera
Hundreds of women who developed meningioma tumors after being injected with Depo-Provera have filed lawsuits against the manufacturer of the birth control shot, Pfizer.
These lawsuits have alleged that the Depo shot can cause women to develop brain tumors, and that Pfizer failed to properly warn doctors and patients about these risks.
In January 2025, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) consolidated many of the individual Depo-Provera lawsuits against Pfizer into a federal multidistrict litigation, or MDL, in Florida. Consolidating the national Depo-Provera lawsuits into a nationwide MDL will help expedite the discovery process in this litigation and make it easier for women injured by the birth control shot to receive a settlement.
Currently, there are more than 800 Depo-Provera lawsuits that are part of this federal MDL. In addition, dozens of women have filed state level claims against Pfizer regarding the link between the birth control shot and brain tumors.
