Depo-Provera & Meningioma Brain Tumors: Women May Require Lifetime Monitoring

Recent lawsuits have alleged that women injected with Depo-Provera will require lifetime monitoring for brain tumors because of the increased risk of meningioma associated with the birth control shot.

More than 1,300 women have filed lawsuit against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Depo-Provera, over claims that the shot increases their risk of developing a form of brain tumors known as meningioma.

If you used Depo-Provera and were diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumor, you may be eligible to file a claim and receive compensation for your health condition.

Ohio Woman Files Depo Lawsuit Over Meningioma Diagnosis

A woman in Ohio named Christine Shepherd recently filed a lawsuit alleging that she developed meningioma tumors after using the Depo-Provera shot for birth control for more than 10 years. The lawsuit alleges that Shepherd used both brand-name Depo shots and generic versions sold by Pharmacia & Upjohn LLC and Pharmacia LL.

After a decade of receiving the Depo-Provera shot, Shepherd alleges that she began to develop symptoms of meningioma, including balance problems, headaches, ringing in her ears (tinnitus), and seizures.

After undergoing a medical examination, Shepherd was diagnosed with intercranial meningioma, and underwent surgery to have her brain tumor removed.

Depo-Provera Users May Require Lifetime Medical Monitoring

Even though the doctors who performed the surgery were able to successfully remove Shepherd’s tumor, in her lawsuit, she alleges that she will be forced to undergo regular MRIs and CAT scans in order to make sure her brain tumor does not return.

Other women who used Depo-Provera may also be forced to undergo monitoring for brain tumors because of the risk of meningioma posed by the birth control shot.

In some cases, women who undergo surgery to treat meningioma may have malignant cells remaining in their body, which could cause their tumors to reappear in the future.

Women who used Depo-Provera but have not yet been diagnosed with brain tumors may also be forced to undergo medical monitoring to ensure that their use of the birth control shot does not cause them to develop tumors at a later date.

More Than 1,300 Depo-Provera Lawsuits Filed So Far

As of October 2025, more than 1,300 Depo-Provera lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of the birth control shot.

These lawsuits have alleged that Pfizer and other manufacturers failed to properly warn doctors and women who used the Depo shot about their risk of developing meningioma brain tumors.

Many of the Depo-Provera lawsuits that have been filed so far were consolidated in a multidistrict litigation, or MDL, in Florida federal court. Consolidating these cases in an MDL will help expedition the legal process for Depo-Provera and make it easier for women with side effects from the birth control shot to receive a settlement.

Although the Depo-Provera litigation is already well-underway, women who used the Depo shot and were diagnosed with meningioma – or who have developed symptoms of a brain tumor – may still be eligible to file a lawsuit and receive compensation for their injuries.
