Depo-Provera Linked to Meningioma Brain Tumors
According to a 2024 study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), women who used the Depo-Provera birth control shot face an increased risk of being diagnosed with brain tumors known as meningioma.
The study found that Depo-Provera users were nearly six times more likely to be diagnosed with meningioma tumors.
Although meningioma tumors are benign, or non-cancerous, they may cause side effects which could make it necessary for women to undergo brain surgery in order to have the tumors removed.
Brain Tumor Lawsuits Against Depo-Provera
Since the publication of the BMJ study linking Depo-Provera to an increased risk of brain tumors, hundreds of women have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of the birth control shot.
The first Depo-Provera lawsuit was filed in California in October 2024 by a woman who developed meningioma brain tumors after using the Depo shot for birth control.
Since then, at least 400 more lawsuits against Depo-Provera have been filed in federal courts by women with meningioma brain tumors.
Hundreds of additional Depo-Provera lawsuits have also been filed against the manufacturers of the birth control shot in state courts.
