Depo-Provera & Meningioma Brain Tumors
A study published in 2024 found that women who used Depo-Provera for birth control are nearly six times more likely to be diagnosed with meningioma brain tumors.
A second study published earlier this year found that Depo-Provera users face a “substantially increased risk” of brain tumors compared to women who took birth control pills.
Although meningioma is a benign, or non-cancerous, form of tumors, women who are diagnosed with this health condition may be forced to undergo brain surgery or other invasive treatments in order to remove the tumors, which can put them at risk of additional complications.
Some of the most common symptoms of a meningioma brain tumor from Depo-Provera include blurry vision, headaches, numbness, and seizures.
Women who are using or who previously used the Depo shot and have developed these or other symptoms of meningioma may wish to talk with their doctor or health care provider to find out whether these symptoms could be a sign of a brain tumor.
Brain Tumor Lawsuits Against Depo-Provera
About 1,200 Depo-Provera lawsuits have been filed in federal against Pfizer, the manufacturer of the birth control shot, by women diagnosed with meningioma brain tumors. The company is also facing several state-level claims filed by women with tumors from the Depo shot.
These lawsuits against Pfizer have alleged that women who use Depo-Provera face an increased risk of developing intracranial meningioma brain tumors, and that Pfizer failed to properly warn doctors and patients about the risk of prescribing or using the birth control shot.
In order to qualify to file a lawsuit, potential plaintiffs must meet all of the following conditions:
- Treated Depo Provera, Depo SubQ Provera 104, or “authorized generic” versions of medroxyprogesterone acetate contraceptive injections;
- Received at least one year of treatment (usually about four injections every three months) with the birth control shot;
- Diagnosed by a health care professional with a cerebral meningioma brain tumor.
If you or a loved one meet all of these criteria, you or your family may be eligible to take legal action and received compensation.
