Benzene Exposure Linked to Cancer
Benzene is a flammable, highly toxic, cancer-causing chemical that is found in a number of petrochemical and industrial products, including:
- Crude oil
- Detergents
- Dyes
- Gasoline
- Plastics
- Tires
Benzene is also commonly used by workers to clean their tools because of its high effectiveness as a cleaning product.
Benzene exposure occurs when workers breathe in air that contains benzene. Regularly inhaling benzene fumes can increase workers’ risk of developing several types of cancer, including:
- Acute myelogenous leukemia
- Myelodysplasia (MDL)
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma
Workers who were regularly exposed to benzene and diagnosed with one of the above cancers may qualify to file a lawsuit and receive compensation.
Who is Eligible to File a Benzene Lawsuit?
In order to be eligible to file a benzene lawsuit, workers who were exposed must meet all of the following conditions:
- Worked at a petrochemical or industrial factory or plant;
- Worked there before 1980; and
- Diagnosed with one or more cancers linked to benzene exposure, including leukemia, myelodysplasia, or multiple myeloma.
Workers who were employed at the following types of job sites where benzene exposure is known to have occurred may be at the highest risk of developing cancers caused by benzene:
- Coke and coal chemical manufacturing plants
- Industrial factories
- Petrochemical plants
- Oil and petroleum refineries
- Rubber tire plants
- Other jobsites where benzene or petroleum products with benzene were stored or transported
If you or a family member meet all of the above criteria, or if you believe you may have been exposed at one of the above facilities, contact the benzene lawyers at Hissey Mulderig & Friend to find out whether you or your family may be eligible to receive compensation.
