Paper mill workers may be at an increased risk of mesothelioma cancer and other illnesses as a result of asbestos exposure in the workplace. Multiple studies have found that paper mill employees face a greater risk of cancer and respiratory diseases than the general population.

According to a study published in 2002, paper mill workers are more than twice as likely to develop pleural mesothelioma and 44% more likely to develop lung cancer than the general population. Other studies have found that paper mill workers are also more likely to be diagnosed with a number of other cancers, including kidney cancer, brain cancer, Hodgkin’s disease and esophageal cancer.

The highest number of mesothelioma deaths in the 2002 study was found among paper mill maintenance workers. These maintenance workers routinely open up the machines at paper mills to ensure that they are working properly. This can cause them to be exposed to asbestos insulation and other protective materials inside the machines, placing them at risk of mesothelioma cancer and other diseases.
