Study warns of increased cardiovascular, kidney disease risk with heartburn medications

A new study has found that patients taking a type of heartburn drugs known as proton pump inhibitors are more likely to develop fatal cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease. The report, published earlier this year in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), is the latest study to highlight the health risks associated with the long-term use of these heartburn medications. Popular Heartburn Drugs Linked to Increased Risk of Kidney Disease

Patients who use a class of heartburn medications known as proton pump inhibitors may face an increased risk of chronic kidney disease, according to a 2017 study. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that patients taking PPIs are 20 to 50% more likely to develop kidney disease that those who did not use the heartburn drugs. (more…)
